In Luke 24:13–32, we follow two disciples walking away from Jerusalem in confusion and broken hope. Though they had heard the reports of the empty tomb, they did not understand what had taken place. Their expectations of the Messiah had been misplaced, and the cross appeared to them not as fulfilment, but as failure. As Jesus draws near and walks with them, their inability to recognise Him exposes a deeper problem — not a lack of information, but a lack of understanding.

Jesus responds by opening the Scriptures, showing that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer before entering His glory. Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He reveals that the cross was not an interruption to God’s plan, but its very centre. The justice of God demands that sin be judged, and the death of Christ stands as the only sufficient atonement. What the disciples had failed to grasp was that the promised redemption could only come through suffering.

As the Scriptures are opened, their hearts burn within them, and in the breaking of the bread their eyes are opened to recognise the risen Christ. This passage shows that true faith is not grounded in partial knowledge or misplaced expectation, but in rightly understanding Christ through the Word. It is through the Scriptures that Christ is revealed, and through that revelation that faith is awakened and strengthened.

If we find ourselves confused, discouraged, or uncertain, the answer is not found in experience or assumption, but in returning to the Word of God. There, Christ is made known, and in Him alone is found the foundation of our hope.
