Where can believers find true assurance when they are conscious of their sin, surrounded by suffering or confronted by powerful opposition? Romans 8 directs us away from our changing performance and circumstances and anchors our security in the unchanging purpose of God and the finished work of Jesus Christ.
Paul asks a series of questions that reveal how completely secure God’s people are. If God is for us, who can ultimately prevail against us? If He did not spare His own Son, will He not provide everything necessary to bring His people safely home? Who can bring a charge against those whom God has justified, and who can condemn those for whom Christ died?
Our assurance rests entirely in Christ. He bore the condemnation our sins deserved, was raised from the dead and now sits at the right hand of God, continually interceding for His people. The accusations against us may be true, but they cannot overturn God’s verdict. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Neither suffering nor persecution, neither the powers of this world nor the accusations of Satan, neither death nor anything else in all creation can separate believers from the love of God in Christ. God will preserve those He has saved. Therefore, amid every trial and every awareness of our own weakness, we may rest with confidence in the complete security that is ours in Christ.
