In Ephesians 4, Paul calls believers to walk in a manner worthy of the calling they have received. Having been saved by God’s grace and united to Christ, Christians are to display that new life through humility, gentleness, patience, and forbearance in love. These are not merely outward behaviours, but Spirit-produced attitudes that shape the way believers relate to one another within the church.
Paul then moves from the characteristics of a humble walk to the reason believers must pursue it. Christian unity is not something we create through human effort, but something God Himself has established. The apostle highlights the sevenfold oneness of Christianity—one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of all. Because God has made His people one, they are called to preserve that unity through the bond of peace.
This passage points us to the work of the Triune God. The Holy Spirit unites believers to Christ, the Son is the one Lord and Saviour of His people, and the Father sovereignly rules over, works through, and dwells within all who belong to Him. Our unity is rooted not in shared preferences, but in the saving work of God Himself.
As we examine our own hearts, this passage challenges us to put aside pride, pursue humility, defend sound doctrine, and diligently preserve the unity that Christ has already secured for His church. By the power of the Holy Spirit, may we walk worthy of our calling and display the reality of our union with Christ.
