Why did Christ give apostles, prophets, evangelists, and pastor-teachers to His church? In Ephesians 4:12–16, Paul answers that question by revealing the purpose of these gifts. Christ did not give leaders to do all the ministry themselves, but to equip His people so that the whole church would be built up.
In this sermon, we see two marks of a healthy, growing church. First, Christ is building a serving body, where every believer is equipped to use their gifts in the work of ministry. As faithful leaders teach God’s Word, model Christlike living, and walk alongside believers through life’s difficulties, the saints are equipped to serve one another, and the whole body grows together in love. Second, Christ is building a mature body, united in the faith, growing in the knowledge of the Son of God, and being transformed into His likeness through the faithful ministry of the Word.
Ultimately, this passage reminds us that Christ Himself is the Head of His church. He supplies its life, causes its growth, and is bringing His people to maturity for His glory. As every member serves according to Christ’s design, the church is strengthened, unified, and built up in love.
