In Ephesians 4:11, Paul turns our attention to the specific gifts that the ascended Christ has given to His church. These gifts are not merely abilities but gifted men whom Christ has appointed for the good of His people. Christ has not abandoned His church but continues to care for and build it through the gifts He sovereignly provides.
This sermon examines the roles of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. We consider the unique purpose of each office, the foundational role of apostles and prophets, and the continuing ministry of evangelists and pastor-teachers in Christ’s church today. Through these gifts, Christ provides leadership, instruction, protection, and spiritual nourishment for His people.
Ultimately, these gifts remind us that Christ is actively building His church. The risen and reigning Lord continues to shepherd His people through the means He has ordained, ensuring that His church is established upon the truth of His Word and equipped for faithful service.
As we study these gifts, we are encouraged to value Christ’s provision for His church, receive His Word with humility, and give thanks for the care He continues to show His people through those He calls to serve.
