In Ephesians 2:4–7, Paul turns from the darkness of our spiritual death to the radiant intervention of God. Having exposed the depth of our condition, he now reveals the source of our salvation. “But God” marks the decisive contrast. What we could not do in our deadness, God accomplished in mercy. Salvation begins not with human initiative, but with divine compassion.

Paul grounds our rescue in the character of God Himself — rich in mercy and great in love. While we were still dead in trespasses, He made us alive together with Christ. He raised us with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places. These are not mere metaphors, but realities rooted in our union with Christ. Our new position is secure because it rests entirely upon His finished work and sovereign grace.

This salvation is not only an act of mercy, but a display of glory. God has raised us in order to show, throughout the coming ages, the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. Our redemption magnifies His generosity and exalts His name.

When we grasp who we now are in Christ, assurance replaces fear and worship replaces pride. May this passage deepen our confidence in sovereign grace and lead us to praise the God who is rich in mercy.
