In Ephesians 2:11–12, Paul calls the Gentile believers to remember their former condition. After explaining that salvation comes by grace through faith, he now turns to the question of identity and belonging within God’s redemptive plan. Before describing the reconciliation accomplished through Christ, Paul first reminds them what they once were apart from Him. As Gentiles, they stood outside the covenant people of God, marked as outsiders and strangers to the promises given to Israel.
Paul then reveals that this separation was not merely cultural or historical. It was deeply spiritual. Apart from Christ, the Gentiles were excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, strangers to the covenants of promise, without hope, and without God in the world. These words expose the true depth of humanity’s condition apart from Christ — alienated from God and without any claim upon His promises.
By calling believers to remember this past reality, Paul magnifies the grace that has been shown in Christ. Only when the depth of our former separation is understood does the glory of reconciliation become clear. Remembering what we once were apart from Christ humbles our hearts and leads us to deeper gratitude for the mercy that has brought us near to God.
