Bitterness rarely remains hidden in the heart. It produces anger, wrath, clamour, slander, and malice—sins that break fellowship, damage relationships, and threaten the unity and testimony of Christ’s church. Paul therefore commands believers to put away both bitterness and all its destructive fruit.

In its place, we are to become kind, tender-hearted, and forgiving. This is more than outward restraint. It is a transformed way of responding to those who have hurt or wronged us: showing compassion, treating them graciously, and refusing to hold their offence against them.

But such forgiveness is impossible in our own strength. Paul directs us to the gospel: “as God in Christ forgave you.” At the cross we see both the seriousness of our own sin and the immeasurable grace we have received. Christ has paid our debt and washed us in His blood. As those who have been forgiven much, we are called to extend that same grace to one another.

When we are wronged, we must bring our hurts and injustices to the Lord, asking Him to give us the strength and heart to love as Christ has loved us. Forgiven people forgive. In doing so, we display the grace of Christ, restore rather than destroy fellowship, and strengthen the body of Christ.
