Paul has been addressing very practical matters: truth, anger, work, and speech. In Ephesians 4:30, he draws back the curtain to reveal a deeper reality. Our conduct not only affects other believers; it affects our relationship with the Holy Spirit who dwells within us and is at work among us.
The Holy Spirit is God—the third person of the Trinity—and He is personally and intimately involved in the lives of believers and in the life of the church. He teaches, helps, gives new life, and builds God’s people together as His dwelling place. Therefore, speech and conduct that damage the body grieve the Spirit who is building it. Continual unwillingness to change can also quench His gracious work, power, and blessing among us.
Yet Paul does not leave believers in fear or condemnation. The Holy Spirit has sealed us in Christ for the day of redemption. He is God’s personal mark of authenticity upon those who belong to Christ, assuring us that we are secure in the salvation Christ has accomplished. We do not pursue holiness to earn or preserve our salvation, but because we have been saved by grace and belong to God.
Because the Spirit has sealed us in Christ, we are called not to grieve Him. May the grace God has shown us increasingly motivate us to live in ways that please Him, build up His people, and bring glory to His name.
